Women’s facial hair removal!

11 Jul

I have been told, but today I came across the actual hadith! I have stopped plucking my eye brows since I was told just to stay on the safe side. However I should have definitely been more proactive and looked for the hadith ASAP. As follows:

Narrated Alqamah: Abdullah (bin Masud) said ” Allah curses those ladies who practise tatooing and those who get themselves tatooed, and those ladies who get their hair removed from their eyebrows and faces except the beard and moustache, and those who make artificial spaces between their teeth in order to look more beautiful whereby they change Allah’s creation”. His saying reached a lady from Banu Asad, called Umm Ya’qub, who came to Abdullah and said: “I have come to know that you have cursed such-and-such ladies?” He replied, “Why should I not curse these whom Allah;s Messenger (pbuh) has cursed and who are (cursed) in Allah’s book!” Umm Yaqub said ” I have read the whole Quran, but I did not find in it what you say “. He said “Verily, if you have read it, you have found it. Didn’t you read : “And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammand (pbuh)) gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it). (Quran V 59: 7). She said, “Yes, I did”, He said, “Verily Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) forbade such things” She said, “But I see your wife doing these things?” He said “Go and watch her”. She went and watched her but could not see anything in support to her statement. On that he said, “If my wife was as you thought, I wouldnt not keep her in my company ” (i.e I would divorce her).

Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol. 60 Hadith # 408

I have also pasted a link from Sunnipath which goes into details, the ruling on this.

Basically facial hair that makes a woman look like a man (beard area, moustache) is permitted to be removed (beautification is encouraged actually when done for one’s husband to see). The fiqh @ Sunni path also say it is allowed to remove facial hair which looks defective, such as mono brow or extremely bushy eyebrows which creates abhorrence to one’s husband. For bushy eyebrows, just clipping the edges, but with caution so as not to change the shape of the eyebrow, as I understand.

Although I thought my original eyebrows may qualify for a little trim, I had to be honest with myself regarding this ruling hence sought opinion from Hubby !

Edit Note: 1/6/2011 Thank you sister Reem for pointing out the mistake in the referral hadith. I have corrected it. HAdith Bukhari Volume 60, hadith number 408

the thing i wana add here is tht if one makes her eyebrows jus for neatening the face or jus by plucking out extra hair and doesnt alter the shape of the eye brows as in make them extra thin , then it is permisable. thining of eyebrows arching or altering their lenght and their natural shape is not allowed , but plucking out extra hair is permisible
    jazakALLAH khair :)

    Salam Sana,
The evidences from the Hadith # 408, narrated Alqamah: Abdullah (bin Masud), it points out the removal of the facial hair apart from the scholarly exceptions seems quite clearly disliked. Please bring forward your proof of its permissibility of removal to neaten the brow and inshallah I’ll post it here once its qualified. One should be extremely careful when voicing what is permissible and what is not and should bring forth evidences thereof from the Quran&/or Hadiths. The choice of acting upon it is of course based on an individual’s strength in belief and fear of punishment and hope for reward from Almighty Allah (swt). JazakAllah for visiting my blog!

But, what about the pubic hair, as these hair are also a cause of worry and often come between hubby and me, when we go for sex. Can I remove it? And, underarms look nice if shaved properly…..it also changes the natural look, if shaved but look sultry, so what to do?

And, there are muslim heroines esp MEERA from Paikstan, who have extremely thin, I mean pencil thin eyebrows. …and what about them?

    Dear Sister,
    Assalamu Alaikum,
The hadith is sahih bukhari and it is true, Allah swt curses those women who as mentioned, tattoes, fixes their teeth for beauty purposes and change their eyebrows unless its abnormal hair in the middle of brow which is allowed to be removed per my understanding. Curse implies Allah’s punishment, I need not go further. Actresses and heroines, not wearing hijab, dancing and prancing for the whole world to see, that is not Islamic. We take our examples from the Prophets and the Pious and the Sahabas.

As for pubic hair and underarm hair it must be cleaned at least every month.

I urge you to read up on womens issues in Islam. sunnipath.com provides a lot of answers by some scholars regarding these issues. http://qa.sunnipath.com/
I urge you to gather some fiqh books. If you need more information please leave a comment.

      Walaikum Assalam Sister,
THis hadith would answer your second question:
      (5) Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah: The Prophet said, “If you enter (your town) at night (after coming from a journey), do not enter upon your family till the woman whose husband was absent (from the house) shaves her pubic hair and the woman with unkempt hair, combs her hair” Allah’s Apostle further said, “(O Jabir!) Seek to have offspring, seek to have offspring!” (Book #62, Hadith #173)

This means that before relation, wife must clean their private parts of the hair. This other hadith is for men indicating shaving private parts and armpits:

      (7) Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “Five practices are characteristics of the Fitra: circumcision, shaving the pubic region, clipping the nails and cutting the moustaches short.” (Book #72, Hadith #777)

The first question of how to remove the hairs, there is no specific indication what should be used, so it is left at your discretion. We do know that from the Prophet pbuh time, they would use sharp blade, and it would be similar to shaving. They may also have used threading and waxing using honey and lemon boiled til thick waxy consistency.

What is the ruling about using artificial hair especially by black women to lengthen their hair

    • UmmMaryam

      May 31, 2011 at 11:18 pm

      Narrated ‘Aisha (R.A):

An Ansari girl was married and she became sick and all her hair fell out intending to provide her with false hair. They asked the Prophet(pbuh) who said, “Allah has cursed the lady who artificially lengthens (her or someone else’s) hair and also the one who gets her hair lengthened.” Volume 7, Book 72, Number 817: Sahih Bukhari

      Narrated ‘Aisha (R.A):

An Ansari woman gave her daughter in marriage and the hair of the latter started falling out. The Ansari women came to the Prophet (pbuh) and mentioned that to him and said, “Her (my daughter’s) husband suggested that I should let her wear false hair.” The Prophet (pbuh) said, “No, (don’t do that) for Allah sends His curses upon such ladies who lengthen their hair artificially.” Volume 7, Book 62, Number 133: Sahih Bukhari

      Narrated Abdullah bin Mus’ud (R.A):

Allah’s Apostle (pbuh) has cursed the lady who uses false hair. Volume 6, Book 60, Number 409: Sahih Bukhari

Narrated Asma (the daughter of Abu Bakr) (R.A): Allah’s Apostle (pbuh) has cursed such a lady as artificially lengthening (her or someone else’s) hair or gets her hair lengthened.Volume 7, Book 72, Number 819:Sahih Bukhari

Sister I hope those hadiths answer your question. Jzkillah(thanks) for visiting my blog~!

      Walaikum Assalam Sister,
Thanks for pointing out, its actually Sahih bukhari volume 60 Hadith # 408, I missed out the 0 at the end of volume 60. But surely you must have searched for the hadith itself and not just the number, right? If you did, you would have come across it. The website which you referred does not have all the volumes of Sahih Bukhari. This is a comprehensive site : http://www.searchtruth.com/searchHadith.php

      (3) Narrated Alqama: ‘Abdullah (bin Masud) said. “Allah curses those ladies who practice tattooing and those who get themselves tattooed, and those ladies who remove the hair from their faces and those who make artificial spaces between their teeth in order to look more beautiful whereby they change Allah’s creation.” His saying reached a lady from Bani Asd called Um Yaqub who came (to Abdullah) and said, “I have come to know that you have cursed such-and-such (ladies)?” He replied, “Why should I not curse these whom Allah’s Apostle has cursed and who are (cursed) in Allah’s Book!” Um Yaqub said, “I have read the whole Quran, but I did not find in it what you say.” He said, “Verily, if you have read it (i.e. the Quran), you have found it. Didn’t you read: ‘And whatsoever the Apostle gives you take it and whatsoever he forbids you, you abstain (from it). (59.7) She replied, “Yes, I did,” He said, “Verily, Allah’s Apostle forbade such things.” “She said, “But I see your wife doing these things?” He said, “Go and watch her.” She went and watched her but could not see anything in support of her statement. On that he said, “If my wife was as you thought, I would not keep her in my company.” (Book #60, Hadith #408)

      Assalamu Alaikum sister,
The hadith is authentic. I actually came across it as footnote on my quran reffering to this hadith. This quran was gifted to me by my parents who went for Hajj at Makkah shariff where they give free qurans to HAjjis. BUt surely you must have come across many other islamic institution and fatwa website siting the same hadith? THe easiest way is to type in google “plucking eyebrows in ISlam” then go to all the videos. You will see a number of reputable sholars stating it is haram.

May Allah swt forgive all the muslim sisters including me, you did not know about this hadith, and neither did I until I was a little older, and neither did many sisters. The judgement is only made for us or against us, when we are shown the truth and then we reject it or accept it. May Allah swt give us emaan and increase us in taqwah and hidayah to live by the truth.

      Assalamu Alaikum sister,
THanks for commenting on my blog. I really never have heard such a saying if steel or iron touches a womans body, they become sinful. It is quite strange to me because there is one hadith of the Prophet pbuh as follows:
      (3) Narrated Sahl bin Sad: A woman presented herself to the Prophet (for marriage). A man said to him, “O Allah’s Apostle! (If you are not in need of her) marry her to me.” The Prophet said, “What have you got?” The man said, “I have nothing.” The Prophet said (to him), “Go and search for something) even if it were an iron ring.” The man went and returned saying, “No, I have not found anything, not even an iron ring; but this is my (Izar) waist sheet, and half of it is for her.” He had no Rida’ (upper garment). The Prophet said, “What will she do with your waist sheet? If you wear it, she will have nothing over her; and if she wears it, you will have nothing over you.” So the man sat down and when he had sat a long time, he got up (to leave). When the Prophet saw him (leaving), he called him back, or the man was called (for him), and he said to the man, “How much of the Quran do you know (by heart)?” The man replied I know such Sura and such Sura (by heart),” naming the Suras The Prophet said, “I have married her to you for what you know of the Quran ” (Book #62, Hadith #54, Sahih Bukhari)

The Prophet pbuh indicated if the man had no gold to give as maher to wife, even an iron ring (very little value) would suffice. If it was true that no steel or iron should touch a woman’s body then why would Prophet pbuh ask the poor man if he can afford an iron ring to marry this woman?

I think I’ll just go with shaving :P

Oh yea is lazer treatment that permanetley stops hair growing back okay ?
I have a husband so it means I won’t have to constantly shave.

        Assalamu Alaikum Sister,
I dont know about lazer treatment sorry, perhaps you should ask a scholar. On the other hand do you know enough about lazer hair treatments and its health side effects and such ? MAybe you should look for more traditional natural ways of hair removal which have longer lasting effects. I heard threading was good, and takes more than 2 weeks for hair to grow back and also waxing but with home made wax of honey, sugar and lemon boiled to a very dense consistancy works for upto one month.Have a search on the net, you may be pleasently surprised.

      Salaam sister,
Upper lips and chin to my knowledge of what the scholars say, they are abnormal hair growth, i.e. there shouldn’t be thick hair growth in a women in those areas and therefor may be removed. Please ask your local scholar to be sure. The way you remove the hair is up to you, that is not restricted to any particular method. However have you researched about lazer hair removal and deemed it safe , short and long term, for your skin and body?

      Walaikum Assalam sister,
I would think so! Not plucking the hair on the arches of the brow but otherwise hair growth which is abnormal as per normal womanly standards, i.e. the portion of the mono brow, mustache, hair on chin and cheeks, necks, etc that which is not normal for women are allowed to be removed.

Thank you for visitng my not-so-active blog. Take care!

Assalamu Alaikum sister, firstly jzkillah for visiting my blog, I’m glad the posts could be of benefit to you. It really is a compilation of my research on this topic of facial hair removal. I am not a scholar / official student of knowledge, so for specifics please refer to an imam/ scholar. From what I know we do not pluck eyebrow nor shape it unless ones husband finds it distasteful, or it’s abnormally thick.

    Asslam o Alaikum
In the hadith you provided it states “remove hair from face”. How have we narrowed this down to plucking eye brows, and deemed that hair that was abnormal (chin, mustache) was safe to remove. I don’t mean to be offending, just confused. Should we not follow the hadith to the exact? Some websites state the hadith with the words “plucking eyebrows” others state “remove hair from face”. How can we be sure that women who remove abnormal hair are not “cursed”. Is there some reference in Quran or Hadith that states what normal and abnormal. Also could you tell me exactly where in the Sahih Muslim/Bukhari this hadith is mentioned.

Thank you so much for your time and help. Really appreciate it.

      May 23, 2012 at 9:54 pm

      Assalamu Alaikum,

Jzkillah for visiting my blog. The Hadith reference is given in the article, did you see it? As for the ruling of abnormal hair and hence allowing it to be removed, this is the collective consensus of the scholars of Islam. As for deciding what is abnormal, you can ask a scholar. Monobrow is an example, because most women don’t have monobrow so it would be considered abnormal, and the portion above the nose is allowed to be removed. Another example is moustache or beard or sideburns. Because women are not allowed to have characteristics of men, these hairs are to be removed. As for how hair is removed generally, it does not matter as it was not referenced in the Hadith. Otherwise it is haraam for women to remove hair from face, and the most common, in fact only time this happens is the thinning of the brows, and that is what is being referred to here. Allah swt knows best. Surely something needs to be said about the people whom Allah swt mentioned in the Quran who said to their messenger “we hear and we obey”. May Allah swt make us from them.
