Fetal Development as per the Quran and Hadith

In surah Al-Hajj, verse 5, Allah (s.w.t) states in translation:-

“O mankind! If you are in doubt about the Resurrection, then verily, We have created you (Adam) from dust, then from a Nutfah (mixed drops of male and femal discharge), then from clot, then from a little lump of flesh, some formed and some unformed (as in case of miscarriage) – that We may make (it) clear to you (i.e. to show you Our Power and Ability to do what We will). And We cause whom We will to remain in the wombs for an appointed term, then We bring you out as infants, then (give you growth) that you may reach the age of full strength. And among you there is those who dies (young), and among you there is he who is brought back to miserable old age, so that he knows nothing after having known.”

In Bukhari, Vol 4, Hadith # 549, the hadith relates to the phenomenon of the Angel placing the soul in the fetus as per Allah (s.w.t) permission as follows:

Narrated by Abdullah (r.a), Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him ) said:-

“(As regards to your creation), every one of you is collected in the womb of his mother for the first 40 days, and then he becomes a clot for another 40 days, and then a piece of flesh for another 40 days. Then Allah (s.w.t) sends an angel to write 4 words: He writes his deeds, time of his death, means of his livelihood, and whether he will be wretched or blessed (in the Hereafter). Then the soul is breathed into his body. So a man may do deeds characteristic of the people of the (Hell) Fire, so much so that there is only the distance of a cubit between him and it, and then what has been written (by the angel) surpasses; and so he starts doing deeds characteristic of the people of Paradise and enters Paradise. Similarly, a person may do deeds characteristic of the people of Paradise, so much so that there is only the distance of a cubit between him and it, and then what has been written (by the angel) surpasses, and he starts doing deeds of the people of the (Hell) fire and enters the (Hell) Fire.”

Hence, it is really important to make lots of duas to Allah (s.w.t) for good child before the 4th month of pregnancy (40 days + 40 days + 40 days). Below are some duas sourced from the Quran relating to this matter:

DUAS FOR RIGHTEOUS CHILDREN

“Our Lord! Make of us (Muslims, bowing to Your (Will), and of our offspring a nation submissive unto You, and show us our Manasik (all the ceremonies of pilgrimage – Hajj and Umrah) and accept our repentance. Truly You are the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful”. (Qur’aan: 2:128)

q21v89

“O my Lord! Grant unto me a good offspring. You are indeed the All-Hearer of dua!” (Qur’aan: 3:38)
Prophet Zakariya (pbuh) made this dua. Maryam was entrusted with Zakariya as a guardian. When Maryam grew up in purity and devoutness, Zakariya longed for such a child for himself, a child who would be pure, virtuous and honourable as Maryam.

q14v40

Rabbi ijAAalnee muqeema alssalati wamin thurriyyatee rabbana wtaqabbal duAAai
“O my Lord! Make me one who establishes Prayer (Iqamat-as-Salat) and also (raise such) among my offspring O our Lord! And accept our dua”. (Qur’aan: 14:40)
As a parent of Ismail and Ishaq, Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) supplicated to Allah (SWT) to make him steadfast in his Salaat. He also asked to make his offspring steadfast in their Salaat.

P.S (Comment added on 17/5/2010): Brothers and sisters I am humbled if this article is helpful to you. I only made this compilation from Quran and Hadiths of the Prophet (pbuh), I am not a scholar nor a fertility doctor. Please have mercy upon me direct any issues you may have about fertility problems and other specific duas to doctors and scholars respectively.z

  1. Please read the following translation from you website. here Allah is referred as we which is not right in my opinion. This should be I not we. i am not a scholar hence i feel this needs to be reviewed. Thanks.

“O mankind! 1. Wif regards to the use of the word ‘WE’ in the quran… Kings of old time always addressed themselves in royalistic plural i.e. Themselves and all their councilmen… Im not sayin dat Allah has councilmen but my point is dat Allah used terms and language which would be easy for people to understand and comprehend… And if by Him usin the royalistic plural to assert His majesty…

  2. Assalamu Alaikum brother,

The word “we” is not referred to in terms of plurality. The scholars of transliteration of the Quran have used the word “we” to denote the royal “we”, it is a linguistic style which Allah swt refers HIMSELF with authority and sovereignty and HIS kingship. Having said that, the translation of the Quran does not do it justice since the english language simply cannot express the depth of the meanings of the Quranic arabic. The real sweetness of understanding the miraculous language style, rhythm and complete meaning of the words in the Quran could only be experienced if one is well versed in Quranic Arabic. Learning Quranic arabic is well worth it.
InshaAllah if I get time, I’ll copy and paste a section of a literature which describes the miraculous Quran in terms of meaning, rhythm, prose and much more.

  3. Assalamualikum,

Kindly can you please suggest a few Duas for me.
I have been married for more than 6 yrs now and trying for a child, I’m having polycystic ovaries and finding it difficult to conceive, can you please suggest me a few duas that can help me recover with my problem and to fulfill my desire of having a child inshaallaha .

And how do i read these duas, weather i’ve to read them after every farz namaz or should i do 2 rakaths of nafil and then read these duas.

Kindly guide me in the right direction…..

    1. Walaikum AssalamS Sister Asma,

May Allah swt grant you shiffa and reward you for your patience. SubhanAllah I really am not a scholar to be giving guidance! I found a dua at duas.org, I hope the following helps.

Dua and prayers for getting a child
It is stated in tradition that a man who wants his wife to conceive should offer to Rak’at Namaz (Prayer) after Juma prayer and lengthen Ruku and Sajdah (prostcration) and recite the following prayer:

Transliteration: ALLAHOOMMA INNI AS’ALOKA BEMA SA’ALAKA BEHI ZAKARIYA RABBE LA TAZARNI FARDVAN WA ANTA KHAAIROOL-VARESEENA ALLAHOOMMA HAB LEE MIL-LADOONKA ZOORRIYATAN INNAKA SAMIYOOD-DOAAE, ALLAHOOMMA BE-ISMEKA ISTAH-LAL-TOHA WA FEE AMANATEKA AKHAZTOHA FA-IN QAZAITA FEE RAHMEHA VALADAVN LIAH-SHAITANE VAJ’ALHO GOOLAMAN MOOBARAKAN ZAKIYAN WA LA TAJ’AL LISHSHAITAN FEEHE SHIRKAVN WA LA NASEEBAN
Oh Allah! I beseech Thee through those who were referred to, by Zakaria. He had said, “Oh my Allah! Leave me not alone and there is no better guardian that Thee.” Oh Allah! Bless me through Thee with a pious child, undoubtedly Thou art the Hearer of all prayers. Oh Allah! Through Thy name I have made this woman permissible unto me and have taken her from Thy guardianship. If Thou indenteth this woman’s womb to be filled with the child then make this child virtuous and pure and let him not partake anything of the Satan.

      1. Sister Asma, try waking up for Tahajjud (night prayer) at the last third of the night and do so abundantly. Also try giving in charity and slaughtering an animal and giving the meat to the poor for this purpose. It is also recommended that you start taking pregnancy multivitamins 4 weeks from when you get pregnant. You should also notice your menstrual cycle and try and conceive in the middle of the cycle, the few days in the middle of 2 periods. I hope that helps! Parhaps you could also ask a knowledgable Scholar about what more nafl acts of worship you can perform. It is assumed that you already perform obligatory acts of worship and other obligations.

    1. May Allah swt grant you shiffa. Brother Im not knowledgeable nor a scholar, I say this as a disclaimer. I know a few things that you could do generally for any difficult situation. You should already be doing obligatory salats at the masjeed. Allah swt is the All knowledgeable, please turn to him for guidance. It is good to increase your nafl salat, get up at night to pray tahajjud, pray the prayer of need Salat al-Hajah, more information on this salat: http://qa.sunnipath.com/issue_view.asp?id=1117
It may also help inshaAllah if you are watching what you eat/drink, not smoke (if you have a habit of it). Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, cut out too much sugar as in soft drinks and sweets. Milk and honey at night I have heard helps. Physical fitness is also important at all times. If you are overweight or underweight you would need to exercise.

  10. JAK – this was very helpful. May Allah reward you, bless you and grant you the highest place in jannah.

  11. salamualaikum..iam trying to get pregnent for 5 years whith out sucses. iwant to know ivf is allowed in islam or not?thank u

    1. Walaikum Assalam sis,
This is a heavy topic. Perhaps best left to a scholar to explain, so please refer to a scholar. According to the teachings I subscribe, IVF in which an outside doner (egg or sperm) is used is akin to Adultery therefore prohibited. Otherwise if the doners are married (husband, wife) and all that is occuring is the fertilization of egg and placed back into the wife’s womb and not any other woman, this is allowed.
If you are residing in a colder climate country but you are originally from a wrmer climate country, this is not unusual sister, so do not worry. Before resorting to such invasive mehtods, try moving to a warmer climate country for 5 months or more. You may have success. This has happened to a relative of mine who after moving from Canada to California she was able to concieve and have a normal dilivery of a healthy son after almost 6 years of trying.
Please see my email to you and thank you for visiting my blog. May Allah swt make it easier for you.

  12. Iam pregnant and my baby is 7weeks and dr. Showed me the heart beat, but as per quran it should come after 40+40+40 days? Allah knowx better what is inside and outside as he is Maliki..
    Umm

    1. Walaikum Assalam sis, thanks for visiting my blog! The Hadith you referred to speaks of the soul’s implementation into the womb and the confirmation of it’s Qadar (predestination decided by Allah swt before a human being is born). Other than that I personally don’t see any relevance to it’s heart working in relation to it’s soul being present. Sleep is an example, as it is referred to as minor death, yet the heart, lungs and vital organs work to keep the body alive by Allah swt will. This is from one of the knowledge of Allah swt that He swt kept from us, and to us a miracle that confirms Allah swt power over us, Allah swt knows best

      1. Assalamu Alaikum, sister firstly I’m sorry to hear about your baby, no amount of words will cure your sadness. May Allah swt make your affairs easy and give you a healthy growing baby. I don’t know any specific duas for baby with down syndrome or any other defects. Please go to an ulema to seek advice. There are a few deeds that could be done. Sacrafice or qurban an animal or more than one if you can afford in the name of the baby. Make charity/ donation in the name of the baby. Fast and make dua just before magrib about curing the baby. Pray nafl prayer in the last third of the night and then make dua to Allah swt to cure the baby. If anyone you know is going to hajj tell them to make dua for your baby near the kaba. Lastly ask Allah swt to increase you in patience I know it’s hard. May Allah swt reward you for your sufferings.

  13. May the Merciful Allah grant you more blessings and prolongs your life in service to Allah and Islam.

      1. Assalamu Alaikum
Thanks for visiting my blog, sorry I don’t have a subscribe feature as I don’t really do much blogging nowadays. You could check back now and then!

  14. Salam. I have found this really helpful but unfortunately I have trouble reading the duas as some are too pixelated. I have trouble reading from roman English. If possible, could you please email me the images of the duas?

    1. Walaikum Assalam brother,
All the duas are sourced from Quran and the references are there so if you cannot read it on this site, best would be to take the reference and look it up in the Quran. Thank you for visiting.

  15. Brother please advice me dua to get pregnant I was pregnant last year and losed my baby after 5 months now again im not getting pregnant

    1. Walaikum Assalam Sister,
May Allah swt make your affairs easy. I am very sorry for your loss. I personally do not know any duas as such. As always the dua of Zakkariya alayhis salam and Ibraheem alayhis salam are standard when planning for children. We need to remember to listen and obey Allah swt in what He (swt) commanded in obligations (fard) and prohibition (haram), in order for us to show our sincerity when we ask of Allah (swt). It will be benefitcial to have a healthy clean diet that is chemical, preservative and colour free, and ofcourse halal and pure, unprocessed and if you can afford, organic. Pregnancy multivitamins with folate, iron, magnesium, B vitamins and vitamin D should be started 3 months before planning for children as a general Doctor recommendation.

  16. Assalamu alaikum
I have been married 5 year.still I did not get pregnant because I have pcod problem and iam overweight.
    so please help me
    And suggest dua’s for me

    1. Walaikum Assalam Sister,
May Allah swt make your affairs easy. I am sorry to hear about your condition. Our Ulemas say in times of test and difficulties best you can do is, make sure you are completing all your fard activities, make much Istighfar and duas. The standard duas for children are that of Prophet Ibraheem and Zakkariyah peace be upon them.

As for your health, I do remember reading a famous stody of a woman who cured her Pcos through a strict gluten free diet, losing weight down to healthy weight for height and living an active healthy lifestyle. Nothing is better than the Sunnah. Especially in this month of Ramadan, it is a perfect opportunity to clean up eating habits, forbid yourself from fried, processed food that contain chemicals, preservatives or colours. Make much dua to strengthen your will power. In the end, only Allah swt is our helper, and He (swt) helps when the people change what is within themselves.
